Remember the early versions of mobile phones. These were big in size with considerable weight, black and white display, big keys and normally came with an antenna. Monophony
Monophonic refers to a single tone or a single melody without any harmony in it. Monophony is referred to as the simplest textures in music. As against polyphony in which there are number of tones playing at the same time, in monophony there is a single tone playing at any time. Monophony is realized as the same single note duplicated at the octave. Monophonic tones can also be rhythmically complex as in the case with some types of Hindu and Chinese music. It is said that the Gregorian chant and most of the medieval music was monophonic.
Monophonic Ringtones
Monophonic ringtones were the first ringtones that a human ear heard. These were the initial ringtones that indicated an incoming call in the early versions of mobile phones. These ringtones are still used in corded telephones. Though now disappeared from the mobile phones, these can still be heard from corded telephones. You can even find early mobile phones with these monophonic ringtones in the market. But these have become a rare sight and not much in use.
Till recently some mobile phones had monophonic ringtones as their in-built ringtones. But with the introduction of polyphonic ringtones monophonic ringtones were completely removed from the mobile phones.
